Fong Leng, Holland’s virtuoso fashion designer, leaves the catwalk for the shimmering walls of Morren Galleries Amsterdam.
In a recent interview, Fong Leng tells about this new look.
You’ve always been known for your gorgeous materials. What are you using now?
“I was so excited to go back to the International Leather Fair in Milan where I splurged on the finest leathers in the world. I used them to create my new wall-hangings, beautifully tinted leathers and fur on silky backgrounds – eastern jungles filled with appliqué animals and exotic birds, imaginary creatures, and sinuous abstract patterns that spring from my Chinese heritage.
Have you left the fashion world entirely?
“No. Really, it is thanks to connections in the fashion world, and thanks to some ‘secret agents’ who find for me jade, crystals, corals, and semi-precious stones, that I’ve made a new line of necklaces. Each necklace is unique and fuses delicious ancient motifs with today’s sensibilities. Phoenician-inspired amulets, for example, in a range of sparkling stones, tiny pendant heads with inlay eyes and puckish red lips.
In your workshop, I saw a lot of objects under construction. Are you branching out?
“I’m continuing what I first exhibited at the Amsterdam Museum two years ago. In a way, I wanted to shine a light on my new work so I literally started designing some lamps. Then, I began to fabricate wonderful designer couches. You can lounge on them in the gallery while enjoying my new show. ”
